Last week, I was in Birmingham, Alabama, for the National Conference on Contemporary Cast Iron Art & Practices (NCCCIAP). The backdrop for this biennial event was Sloss Furnaces National Historic Landmark, a truly a remarkable venue that stands out as America’s only blast furnace from the last century being preserved and interpreted as an historic industrial site. There was a great slate of activities for the NCCCIAP, including hands-on demonstrations, mold making workshops, student cupola competitions, guest furnace demonstrations, panel discussions, and art exhibitions. The grassroots, intergenerational character of the NCCCIAP was incredibly inspiring, and I hope to get back to Sloss for the next iteration of this event.
Shelter in place!
A day of firsts for myself, the students and faculty at Georgia College. First time working at a school in Georgia, and their first aluminum furnace was rammed up, everyone is really excited about it. And, it was the first time lecturing and giving a demo in the middle of a TORNADO. A surreal experience, but still a fantastic day in Milledgeville. Thanks to everyone here!
Out on the road…
I’ve been fortunate enough to be asked to be a visiting artist next week at Georgia College and State University in Milledgeville GA, where we will be completing their first aluminum furnace! Fellow WVU graduate student and alum Matt Forrest is now faculty at GCSU, and I look forward to meeting the rest of the faculty and students and sharing what we’ve been up to at Fairmont State University.
I’m also excited to be traveling to Sloss Furnaces in Birmingham for the National Conference on Contemporary Cast Iron Art & Practices. Lots going on at this event, giving a demo on pattern making, helping Professor Kurt Dyrhaug and his students on their furnace, a piece in the Professional Exhibition, and giving a presentation on the 2018 International Cast Iron in Art Conference in Scranton PA. Busy Busy!

Give Me Some Space!
O-6 was recently accepted to the Marshall University: School of Art & Design 6th Annual National Juried Exhibition titled “Give Me Some Space!”. This year’s exhibition was juried by Alison Helm, chair/coordinator of the WVU Visual Arts Department, and it sounds like a great show. If you are in the area, the exhibition opens January 16th at the Marshall VAC and runs through February 10th.
